I received a copy of Cara Comini’s new book 30 Days Grain free in exchange for an honest review. I was pretty sure this would be a great book because I have been following her blog for several years now and she has consistently good recipes and posts at Health, Home, and Happiness. I also have been an affiliate of her e-cookbooks and have a review I published a few years ago at Purposeful Nutrition.
30 Days Grain-free is exactly what it sounds like, a full menu plan for 30 days including all the needed recipes. More and more eating grain free is recommended for various chronic health issues- diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, autoimmune diseases, and weight loss. Grains are not easy for our bodies to digest so that causes trouble for those with poor gut health (which is most Americans). Grains are also starches which end up breaking down into sugars in our body through digestion. Those sugars feed weight gain and insulin resistance.
The author of this book has been grain free with her family for some time so she has plenty of experience. She has also seen some really great results in various family members and she shares some of her personal experiences in the first part of the book.
Four of the chapters are a weeks worth of menus. Chapter 7 is homemade staples recipes including pesto, ketchup, mayonnaise, cultured salsa, and sauerkraut. Chapter 8 is titled Craving Busters and includes recipes for dried fruit candy, beef jerky, and grain free cupcakes.
Chapter 1 is titled Grain Free Basics and includes information on how to get started and grocery shopping guidelines.
We tried the Slow Cooker Pulled Pork over Greens with homemade barbecue sauce and it was wonderful. I had never thought about serving a main dish like this over greens but it worked really well and my whole family like it.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to try grain free eating (or realizes they should try it). It takes the guesswork out of the transition and will make the learning curve much smoother. I also recommend this book to anyone who is already eating grain free. You may already understand this way of eating, but you will get some great new recipes to try and enjoy. How can you go wrong with that?
