Healing Patiently: Healing Your Gut Without Losing Your Mind is a new e-book out in the health world written by Chloe Breczinski, a health blogger at How We Flourish. The focus of her book is working your way successfully through the GAPS diet, a diet my oldest daughter was on a few years ago.
I have to say I wish I had written this book. I think this is an incredibly needed book and Chloe Breczinski has done an awesome job putting this book together. It is 100 pages long and starts with her sharing her story, a very encouraging journey from depression and anxiety to health and stability. Chloe gives many tips along the way of what enabled her to stick with this challenging healing diet and find health and healing on the other side. A large portion of the book is divided into the various stages of GAPS and is laid out in a very easy to understand way. She includes some helpful charts of how to add foods back into your diet. There are also a good number of basic recipes in the last part of the book, including How to Prepare Stock (a staple of the GAPS diet), How to Roast a Chicken, and How to Make Yogurt and Sour Cream.
At the end of the book she includes 2 of her spreadsheets to help you track your own path through the GAPS diet. These 2 spreadsheets look very helpful and I wish we had them when my daughter was on the diet. “The first one is for daily, detailed tracking. Here you can record your starting symptoms, then use the remainder of the chart to record what you eat, any supplements you take, any exercise, your detox baths, stress, sleep, bowel movements, symptoms, and foods added.” (p. 92) “The next set of charts are spreadsheets that give you an at-a-glace view of what you have been eating and adding in. Each chart can be used for 15 days. It also has room to record daily tasks, like drinking broth, taking a detox bath, etc. It is color coded by stage. ” (p. 94)
This book is obviously not necessary to doing the GAPS diet, but it will sure help if you decide to add it to your toolbox. It is worth reading and rereading when you need encouragement. As she says in one point in the book, there is no cheating with GAPS and it will take some time. She especially emphasizes the need for patience when on the diet. Chloe gives you the tools and appropriate expectations to stick with this diet.
