Insulin resistance is the result of too much glucose in the bloodstream that isn’t making its way into the cells to create energy. Insulin is the “key” that unlocks the cell’s doors, so the glucose can be used as it is intended. If the insulin can’t unlock the door, then the glucose becomes stored in the bloodstream, turned into fat, or eliminated as waste. None of which is a very good thing.
Chances are, if you discover you have insulin resistance, you have some choices: stopping negative habits and creating positive habits to replace them. That may sound easier said than done, doesn’t it?
If you haven’t had blood work to determine exactly where you are in regard to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, liver health, and cardiac health, I recommend you do that ASAP. (I can help with understanding and interpreting those results as well. Contact me to book a consult to discuss your lab work and help to determine how to understand and respond to your values.)
The key to stopping bad habits that are making you fat and wrecking your health actually is simple:
(Notice I didn’t say easy. Easy and simple are not always the same thing)
1. Be honest about your situation
2. Get educated
3. Take action
Be honest with yourself and others.
Don’t sugar coat – pun intended – your situation. This may be the hardest part of change. It is easy to ignore insulin resistance if you don’t have a direct diagnosis of diabetes yet. But if you have insulin resistance, you are eating many of the wrong foods in excess and you are not moving your body enough. Get to the root of the problem and be honest with yourself about why you are sabotaging your health. If you need help, consider a counselor to see if your choices are due to depression or an issue in life that you haven’t been able to work through. Many food choices are tied to emotional issues. Be willing to face some tough stuff and do the work to ensure your better health.
Get educated about food.
Once you have addressed any emotional issues that may be tied to your food choices, get educated about food. Take a nutrition class or surf the web. Teach yourself how food works and use the scientific information to make new choices. You may not have known that the foods you were choosing weren’t what you need. Perhaps you need help with portion size. There is an answer to every question and information about every aspect of food that will give you the knowledge and the power to make positive changes.
I am a health coach specializing in insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. I offer both group coaching for women and individual coaching for men or women. As someone who faces insulin resistance myself, I have done the research that you need to make changes that will last.
Learn about other factors that are significant to lowering your insulin resistance.
Did you know that stress, gut health, lack of sleep, and exercise all impact how insulin resistant you are? You can do everything right with eating and fasting and still really struggle with insulin resistance, if you are ignoring the impact of these other areas. I have developed courses for each one of these areas, that can help you reverse and lower YOUR insulin resistance. All of these courses are available in my group coaching program and can also be purchased individually as you like.
Take action.
As you grow your knowledge and get fired up about eating better, take action. Try new recipes. Join a weight loss group on social media. Get a new workout or food app. Do the things you need to do to change the chemistry in your body and burn the excess fat off, as well as lower the glucose in your bloodstream. Get accountability so you stick to your choices.
