The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook
I received this cookbook as a review copy. Let me say right off that it is absolutely beautiful. At 449 pages it has a lot of great resources for a whole food lifestyle. Not only does it have over 300 recipes, it also has a number of chapters in the first part of the book that explain in very readable prose what the whole food life is about. I loved these chapters, probably because I love learning about nutrition and health and getting the tools to equip me for that. The book is worth the price alone for the first 83 pages of teaching. The chapters include the whole diet story, digestive health, organics and your health and the planet, the basics of a whole foods diet, stocking your whole foods kitchen, and essential cooking equipment to name a few.
As you can see from the front cover of the cookbook, there are over 300 recipes in this book. I have not made many of them yet but I hope to. For dinner recently I made the zucchini and potato hash (even though it was in the breakfast section) and my family found it quite tasty. The recipes include sections on cultured foods, smoothies, breakfast, fresh breads and muffins, soups, fresh salads and vegetables, vegetarian main dishes, beverages, whole grains, fish/poultry/meat, healthy snacks, and nutritious desserts. I was happy to see a healthy collection of sourdough recipes in the book amongst the breakfast and bread sections and even a recipe for kombucha sourdough bread starter in the cultured section. The whole grain section contains information on soaking and cooking, including a handy cooking chart for soaked whole grains vs. unsoaked whole grains. I think that will be very helpful. And the kombucha recipe (which I don’t really need as I make it regularly) has suggestions for flavored kombucha which I have not done yet. So now I am full of ideas on how to make my kombucha even better.
One other thing I like about the recipes is that they do not use unusual ingredients. I have what is needed for these recipes (for the most part) in my kitchen and pantry for the most part. They are doable recipes.
Although there are not images with each recipe, there are several photo sections with some beautiful images of selected recipes from the book. Those pictures do a great job of creating that desire to make those recipes.
This cookbook is available on Kindle or in paperback, whichever format is more comfortable for you.
Grand Central Publishing has gracious agreed to give a copy of this lovely cookbook to one of my readers. I am opening a giveaway from May 6th through May 11th. Please enter to win a hard copy of this book so you may enjoy it in your kitchen too. The entry form is at the bottom of this post.
I have included here a recipe for Gingered Carrot Soup from the Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook so you can get a “taste” of what is available in this book.
- 1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, crushed
- 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger
- ½ to 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 2 pounds carrots, peeled and chopped
- 6 cups water or Homemade Chicken Stock
- 2 to 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 to 2 teaspoons sea salt or Herbamare
- Coconut milk, for garnish (optional)
- 1. Heat the coconut oil in a 6‑quart pot over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until soft, about 5 minutes.
- 2. Add the garlic, ginger, and spices; and continue to sauté for 1 minute more.
- 3. Add the carrots, stir to coat with oil and spices, and cook 3 to 4 minutes. Add the water or broth, cover, and simmer until the carrots are soft, about 30 minutes. Stir in the lemon juice.
- 4. Using a stainless steel immersion blender, puree the soup in the pot, or cool the soup briefly and transfer the soup to a blender and blend on high until pureed, working in batches until all of the soup is pureed.
- 5. Season with sea salt to taste.
- 6. For added taste and appearance, serve in individual bowls with a swirl of coconut milk if desired.

Gorgeous cookbook, we made a family pact together at home to start eating healthy as of January this year. After all of us getting sick from 1 years worth of couponing and bad food, we finally see the light….best move ever. We are a family of 6 so it’s expensive but planning is the key…cookbooks play a big part in that.

That is great Samantha. Keep up the good work. It does get expensive sometimes (I have a family of 6 as well). But I figure poor health costs alot too.
